Getting Started

Beginners' classes are run monthly on the River Eden at the Sands from April - September commencing the first Tuesday of each month.

These classes need to be pre-booked by contacting Tony on 07973231844 or Rachel on 07514644507. Alternatively you can email "tonycolla1 'at' btinternet.com" or “rachelprudham" at "btinternet.com"

You do not have to join the club for the first session, so you can come and try without joining. However, we ask you to pay a non-refundable deposit of £10.00 per person when booking. Assuming you enjoy the first session, which we hope you will, you can become a full member, and credit will be given for the £10.00 against the membership fee

The annual membership fee is all you pay for river sessions and it includes all tuition and use of club equipment.

The club owns a number of kayaks, open boats, sea boats, paddles, buoyancy aids, spray decks and helmets. Members are allowed to use club equipment for club sessions and trips for free. However if equipment is damaged or lost as a result of negligence or misuse the club retains the right to charge the member for the cost of replacement

For information on clothing and what equipment you will need to bring with you, please see the What to wear section, or speak to Tony or Rachel on the numbers given above

You are also welcome to call down to the club and speak to someone at the beginning or end of one of the regular sessions. See the Section What does the club do for the times of these sessions.

We encourage beginners of all ages, from aged 10 up to the over 50s, the only requirement being the ability to swim 50 metres in light clothing.

There are few activities which provide

  • a learning experience
  • a means of keeping fit
  • enjoyment of the outdoors
  • a social hub
  •  a temporary distraction from the digital world (take note all parents of young teenagers out there!)

and which are

  • such good value, costing only £15.00 or £25.00 per annum, to include all specialist equipment and all tuition; and
  • so accessible, the regular sessions, both on the river and in the pool, being conveniently based in Carlisle City Centre
