Sadly surf trips can be cancelled because of a lack of surf.
Like all things related to weather forecasting, predicting surf well in advance is not easy, however you can look up surf prediction tables on the River Level page of the website.
The question is “What creates good surf?”
Two main factors affect if the surf will be good:-

Our second succesful Slalom event on the Sands Rapid. The sun shone and the river was flowing at good level, it made putting the gates up in the rain on Saturday all worthwhile.
In addition to good support from Carlisle CC, paddlers attended from both Copeland CC and Selkirk CC, the youngest paddler was 7 years old and he was pretty impressive for a first attempt on moving water.
Ray impressed us all by his ability to miss gate 6 on both runs and Ian had an impressive capsize in his open boat which ruined his chances of beating Martin. Better luck next year Ian.

With the night drawing in we will be moving to our winter schedule at the beginning of October.
The last evening session on the river will be the 22nd September, the coaches will then take a well earned rest until Thursday 6th October for the first pool session. The next river session taking place 10 - 12 on Saturday 8th October.
No formal beginners sessions take place in winter, however if the river level is suitable, members of the September intake can complete their 1 star.

Signal Crayfish found in the Derwent Catchment!! A member of the public has reported to the Environment Agency in Penrith seeing a crayfish in the St Johns Beck (Derwent Catchment) near Threlkeld. No crayfish (native or non-native) were previously known to occur in this catchment. Environment Agency staff from fisheries and FRB (Fisheries, Recreation and Biodiversity) have confirmed that non-native signal crayfish are present.

Having had varying weather forecasts throughout the week, it was good to meet at the club in bright sunshine. I had even put on shorts for the first time this summer. Martin's trailer and the cars were loaded up and we left the club at around 10, a mixture of experienced paddlers, newbie's such as Stewart, Oliver and Faith plus various family members
